Cataracts can be present at any age. Commonly, people over 50 years of age present with age related cataract. Even infants can have congenital cataracts. Cataracts may develop due to injury or may be related to certain systemic diseases or certain drugs.
Depends on the grade of cataract and your visual disability. You need to discuss with your ophthalmologist regarding this.
Very few people experience a condition called ‘secondary cataract’, months or years after cataract surgery. This happens due to opacification of the back part of the capsular bag (on which the Intraocular lens is implanted during cataract surgery) and therefore it is also called ‘posterior capsular opacification’(PCO). This opacification can easily be treated by performing a painless OPD procedure called YAG Laser capsulotomy.
Like any other surgery, cataract surgery may also be associated with pain, discomfort, bleeding, swelling and infection. But very few patients experience serious complications. And in most cases, these complications may be managed successfully.
Cataract is a permanent change, in the form of opacification of the natural crystalline lens of the eye. The only definitive treatment for cataract is surgical removal of the cataractous lens. If no treatment is done for cataract, the opacity increases and leads to progressive vision loss. Sometimes the cataract may become very dense and hard, and removal of such a cataract may increase the risk of collateral damages.
During cataract surgery, after removal of the cataract, an intra-ocular-lens(IOL) is implanted in the eye. This takes care of most of the refractive corrections, and you don’t need to wear very thick glasses. But you may still require wearing glasses, depending on the type of IOL you choose for implantation.
